Obituary for Doris M Riekena (Simpson)

Doris M. Riekena 92, of Stonehill Care Center and formerly of 3262 Hillcrest Rd., passed awaySunday, April 6, 2014 at Stonehill. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Harmony Christian Church, Zwingle, Iowa with the Rev. Stuart Vander Vegte officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.Wednesday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. and from 9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Doris was born on February 10, 1922 in Zwingle,IA, the daughter of Ross and Lelia Simpson. On January 25, 1941, Doris married Ben Riekena. He preceded her in death on March 31,1953. She then attended the University of Dubuque where she received her Associates Degree in Education and taught in the Epworth and Farley school districts for several years. She was awarded the Greyhound Ticket Agency in 1959 and for the next 30 years she was the owner operator of the Union Bus Depot in Dubuque. She was an avid Cubs fan and a charter member of the Dubuque Transit Board. She loved her family deeply and especially enjoyed the visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Surviving are her children, Mary Kay Patters and Ron (Carol) Riekena both of Dubuque; her grandchildren Dan (Karen) Patters of Dubuque and Amy (Jim) Connor of West Linn, OR; her great grandchildren Abby and Alex Patters of Clive, IA and Mary and Charlie Connor of West Linn, OR; her step great grandchildren Tony, Katie and Aaron Fassbinder; her step great great grandson Charlie Fassbinder; her brother Rusty (Kitty) Simpson of Puyallup, WA; her brothers-in-law Stan Matthews of Bellevue, IA and Clarence Riekena of Mankato, MN and her sister-in-law Grace Simpson of Dubuque, IA


She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; her brothers, James, Roland, Fred, Bill, Glen, Al, Ray and Gary Simpson; her sisters, Ethyl Follman, Melva Edwards, Kay Nemmers, Sandra Morgan and Sharon Matthews.
