Obituary for Melvin L Heins

Melvin L Heins
Melvin L. Heins, 84, of Dubuque, formerly of Galena, Illinois died Thursday, August 31, 2017 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, September 3 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, with Sister Margaret Anne Kramer officiating. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of services, Sunday at the funeral home.
Melvin was born on November 7, 1932 in Galena, Illinois the son of Leo and Alice (Breitencam) Heins. He married Jean Raisbeck on May 31, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Galena.
Melvin was employed in the maintenance department at Kraft Foods for 25 years. In 1974, he began working at John Deere as an electrician until retiring in 1995.
His hobbies were fishing, hunting, bowling and gardening. He enjoyed puzzles and playing cards. Melvin’s greatest joy was spending time with family. His life was a testament to this. Always there to help with home projects and a popular caretaker with his grandchildren. Mel was comfortable in the kitchen and not opposed to experiment - rhubarb pie and such. Mel loved to tinker around the house. Home was important - where his heart was and where he wanted to live out his life. He suffered numerous medical afflictions over the past 3 years compromising the likelihood of his wishes to remain at home. His wife for over 65 years, Jean, provided the needed care - and Melvin did spend his remaining years at home. Characteristically, Melvin was selfless in nature, mild mannered, avoided the spotlight, a man of few words - but much action. Love of being with family kept Melvin looking forward to all of his tomorrow’s in spite of his physical limitations and discomfort. His loss is beyond measure. We anxiously await our reunion.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Ellen Reddies, Richard Heins, Dan Heins, Connie Heins, Liz Heins, Jane (Gregg) White and Steve (Heather) Heins; grandchildren, Jenny (Torrey) Bahr, Karl Reddies, Rachael (Jeremy) Allen, Samantha Heins, Dylan Heins, Ryan (Jessica) Murphy, Kat Foley, Nate (Leah) White, Julie (Kyle) Ager, Amber (Adrianne) Heins, Jake Heins, Tim Wall and Erica Wall; great- grandchildren, Deandra Reddies, Maddy Allen, Caleb Allen, Michael Reddies, Crissy Reddies, Oliver, Sawyer, Willow and Sophie; and sisters, Marilyn Abrahamsen and Janet (John) Connors.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
