The Rev. John E. Burkhart, PhD, 82, of 1005 Lincoln Ave., Dubuque, died Friday, June 4, 2010, at Bethany Home, Dubuque.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Ave., Dubuque, where friends may call from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N. Grandview Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
John Ernest Burkhart was born on Oct. 25, 1927, in Riverside, Calif., son of Lockie (Dryden) Burkhart and the Rev. Joseph Ernest Burkhart. He married Virginia French on Sept. 16, 1951, at First Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph, Mo.
During the Korean War, Dr. Burkhart served as a chaplain in the Air Force. From 1953 to 1959, he was the Presbyterian campus pastor at the University of Southern California. In 1959, Dr. Burkhart joined the faculty of McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, becoming a full professor of Theology in 1968. He taught at McCormick until his retirement in 1993.
Dr. Burkhart lectured throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Cyprus, England and Germany. In Illinois, he served as interim pastor for five Presbyterian congregations. His publications include "Worship and Understanding the Word of God," as well as numerous professional articles and book reviews.
In 1949, Dr. Burkhart received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he was selected for Phi Beta Kappa. Fifteen years later, Occidental awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. Dr. Burkhart received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California. Ordained in 1952, he was a member of the Presbytery of Chicago and listed in Who's Who in America. Dr. Burkhart did postdoctoral study in Anthropology at University College London. He was made a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, and of the Society of Values in Higher Education. President of the American Theological Society, he also was a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Catholic Theological Society of America, and the North American Academy of Liturgy. An avid ecumenist, Dr. Burkhart was a consultant to the Reformed/Roman Catholic International Dialogue, which met in Venice, Italy, in 1986.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Virginia; and their three children, David (Deborah Shidler) Burkhart, of San Bruno, Calif., Audrey Burkhart, of Chicago, and Deborah (Scott) Haines, of Santa Rosa, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Dr. Burkhart's name to McCormick Theological Seminary, 5460 South University Ave., Chicago, IL 60615; Bethany Home, 1005 Lincoln Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001; Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001; and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, 2728 Asbury Road, Dubuque, IA 52001.
