Rosemary Zauche, 81, of Peosta, passed peacefully into life anew on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 20, from 5-8 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 3200 Asbury Rd, Dubuque. On Saturday, Jan. 21, visitation will be 10 a.m., followed by the funeral services at 11 a.m. St. Peter Lutheran.

Rosemary was born January 10, 1936 in Anamosa, Iowa, raised on a farm near Morley, Iowa. She graduated from Morley High School. She attended one year at the University of Northern Iowa and then completed her teaching certificate at the University of Dubuque. She taught for first grade for 3 years at Olin, IA. Rosemary Shumaker and Carl were united in marriage on October 8, 1960 at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Olin.

Rosemary was a 4-H leader and helped start Dubuque County 4-H Youth Ambassadors. She was active in beef promotions, serving in leadership roles with the Dubuque County Cow Bells (now called Cattlewomen) and doing cooking promotions with beef at Dubuque-area high schools and shopping centers. She started the Volunteer Auxiliary Board at Bethany Nursing Home. She was an active member of Toastmasters.

Rosemary was instrumentation in starting the St Marks Community Center in downtown Dubuque. She served as program director. Rosemary and Carl did workshops on retirement and hosted marriage retreats.
Rosemary enjoyed sharing her sewing and volunteer coordinating skills to fill a need. During Iraqi Freedom war in 2003, Rosemary recruited volunteers from several churches to sew plastic-sealed personal hygiene bags for troops in the Dubuque National Guard. When Western Dubuque High School got new uniforms in the early eighties, Rosemary was instrumental in recruiting volunteers for sewing on stripes on the 200 uniform pants.
She spent her life as a faithful wife to Carl and of God’s creation feeding not only her family, but all of the hired help on the farm and farm visitors. She could stretch a meal from 3 to 13 in a moment’s notice. She enjoyed garden-raised produce and farm-raised beef and chickens. She was active in the farming operations till her late 40’s. Rosemary then developed a passion for not only painting china, but teaching others the skill. In her later years, she enjoyed finally finding time to read.

Rosemary was a founding member at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Grace Lutheran Church. She served as a Sunday-School teacher at St. Peter and Lord of Life. She even put together Easter Breakfast at St. Peter when her kids were young.

Rosemary is survived by her 4 children; Dan (Jackie) Zauche of Peosta, Cindy (Doug) Recker of Peosta, Carl J. (Beth) Zauche of North Liberty, and Tim (Geri) Zauche of Platteville; 12 grandchildren, Rob (Kaitlyn), Jacob, Ally, John, Josh, Madalyn Zauche , and Jared Woock, and Sarah (Mark) Wedige, and Vaughn Recker (Kelly Winger), Andre, Nathan, Natalie Recker; and 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Margaret (Dale) Clyde, and sister-in-law Helen (Loren) Pahl, and 5 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. Zauche and parents, Harlan and Ruby Shumaker.
