Obituary for Eleanor F Ray (Huntoon)

Eleanor F. Ray, 89, of Dubuque died June 10, 2019 at Stonehill Care Center. Funeral Services will be held Friday June 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Layton officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at church.
Eleanor was born on September 12, 1929 in Dubuque the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Trewin) Huntoon. She married Charles C. Ray Jr. on May 20, 1950 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Charles preceded her in death on May 1, 1987 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Eleanor attended the Rockford College before transferring to the University of Dubuque where she graduated with a degree in Education in 1964. She went on to teach 2nd through 5th grade at Table Mound Elementary School for 29 years before retiring.
Eleanor owned the Fenelon Place Elevator which has been handed down throughout her family since 1912.
She stayed active in the Dubuque community belonging to many groups including to PEO IP Chapter, the DAR Julien Dubuque Chapter, the Clio Club, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, the Dubuque Retired Teachers Organization and the AAUW.
Eleanor loved to spend her free time reading an array of different books but she mostly loved children’s literature. She also loved traveling with her family to Utah, Alaska, Paris and family weddings all over the country.
She is survived by her daughters Amy (Steven) Schadle of Dubuque, Cynthia Rowland of Yigo, Guam, Barbara Ray of Dubuque, Daphne (James) Loecke of Manchester, IA; grandchildren Elizabeth (Randall) Lester of Dubuque, Christopher Rowland of Yigo, Guam, Toby (Nash) Perkins of Clarksburg, Maryland, Jamey (Alisa) Decker of Gilburt, AZ, Allison (Ryan) Peck of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Rachel Loecke of Huntington Beach, CA; sister-in-laws Jane Ray of Springfield, VA and Sarah Schwarcz of Libertyville, IL; nephew Ivan (Susan) Huntoon of Kansas City, Mo; Niece Susan (Duane) Watts of Oklahoma; She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Clifton Huntoon; her sister Helen Henderson; three brother-in-law’s Beecher Henderson, James Ray and Otto Schwarcz.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Dubuque or St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
