Obituary for Joseph L. Hauer

Reverend Joseph L. Hauer, 69, died Thursday, August 20, 2020, at Unity Point-Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Public visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 23, at Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Rd., Dubuque. Masks and social distancing are required. Private Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 24, at Church of the Resurrection, with Archbishop Michael Jackels presiding, and Rev. Thomas McDermott as homilist. Joe was born January 20, 1951 in New Hampton, IA, the son of Gregory and Bernice (Bodensteiner) Hauer. He began his education at Loras College, earning his B.A. in Political Science in 1973, and went on to earn his M.A. in Theology from The Saint Paul Seminary in 1981.

He was ordained to the priesthood by Most Rev. .James J. Byrne on May 23, 1981, and went on to serve on the faculty at St. John High School in 1981, as Associate Pastor for St. John in Independence and All Saints in Rowley, and St. Joseph in Marion from 1984 – 1986. He began his graduate studies at Angelicum in Rome in June of 1986, completing his studies in 1988. Rev. Hauer then served as Pastor at St. John the Evangelist in Placid from 1988 to 2000. From 2000-2002, Rev. Hauer completed his studies in Canon Law in Rome. He was assigned to Church of the Resurrection in 2002, where he served as Pastor until his retirement in 2018.

Rev. Hauer served as Director of Permanent Diaconate Program, Associate Director of Vocations; Defender of the Bond, Director of Vocations & Continuing Formation of Clergy, Archdiocesan Worship Commission, Judicial Vicar, Metropolitan Tribunal, Judicial Vicar Interdiocesan Tribunal of Second Instance- Province of Dubuque, and Director of Seminarians and Young Priests, Judge for the Metropolitan Tribunal, and Pastoral Coordinator for Holy Family Catholic Schools, Dubuque.

Rev. Hauer is survived by two brothers, Jim (Jan) Hauer of Solon, IA, and Jerry Hauer of West Union, IA; and his nephews and nieces, John, Jordan, Trent, Trevor, Sydney, and Saige.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rev. Joseph L. Hauer Memorial Fund.
