Obituary for Josephine W Green (Wheeler)

Rev. Josephine “Jo” W. Green, 81 of Dubuque died Friday, March 1, 2024.  Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at Summit Congregational United Church of Christ followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Click here to view the Memorial Service for Rev. Josephine Green.

Jo was born September 5, 1942, in Fargo, North Dakota, daughter of Ernie and Frieda (Erickson) Wheeler.  She graduated from Benson, Minnesota High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN and her MDiv from the University of Dubuque.

On March 21, 1964, she married Merlin Green in Benson, Minnesota.

After graduating from the University of Dubuque, Jo served the United Church of Christ for 17 years, acting as interim pastor for 12 churches in those 17 years.

Jo was an avid reader and collector of books.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin Green of Dubuque; a son, Jeffrey (Christina) Green of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a son in law, Stanley Hatch of Flourtown, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, Devon, Alexander, Taylor, seven great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; and a sister, Jane (Rich) Heydt of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Adina Hatch in 2022, and both parents.

The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summit Congregational United Church of Christ.  The Green family extends a special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque and the staff at Grand Meadows for their compassionate care.
