Green Burial/Natural Burial

Green Burial/Natural Burial

Green Burial, also referred to as Natural Burial, has been increasing in popularity in recent years. At Egelhof, Siegert & Casper, we are embracing the trend toward environmentally friendly end of life practices. Our staff is experienced at providing natural options for families, and we have been honored to provide our assistance to numerous families from across Iowa in arranging a Green Funeral at Casper Creek Natural Cemetery, located just outside Galena, Illinois.

What is Natural Burial?

Natural, or Green Burial by definition is the interment of a deceased loved one in the soil, in a manner that does not include traditional embalming, synthetic and non-biodegradable materials, or concrete burial vaults. While there are no state laws that prohibit this type of burial, it must take place in a cemetery that has rules allowing this type of burial.

How Is My Deceased Loved One Cared For?

When a family chooses Natural Burial, they have three choices: embalming using green embalming chemicals, no embalming, or cremation. The State of Iowa does legally require that a person be either buried, embalmed, or cremated within 72 hours after death, which may affect a family’s decision in this area. Regardless of the decision made, the deceased person is commonly dressed in natural fiber clothing, or a natural fiber shroud is used. Our staff can assist you in clothing and shroud selections.

1.     Families may choose to have the embalming process performed using a special formaldehyde free, environmentally friendly embalming fluid.

2.     Families may choose to not have embalming. In this case, after the funeral director brings the deceased person into their care, they will wash the person and perform any state required disinfection protocol. The deceased person will then be placed into a refrigerated unit in order to inhibit decomposition. Burial will need to take place within 72 hours of the time of death.

3.     Families may choose to do cremation, and then bury their loved one’s cremated remains in a Natural Cemetery using a biodegradable urn.

Casket and Urn Selections

Natural Burials require a casket or urn that is completely biodegradable. No plastic or metal is used in the caskets and urns, they are typically made of wood or other natural materials. Our staff can assist you in finding a casket or urn option that is considered natural/green.

What About the Funeral Service?

Families who choose Green/Natural Burial may still have public gatherings and services. Our staff will sit down with your family and discuss how best to help you celebrate your loved one’s life, while still adhering to your wishes for Natural Burial.
