Clara was born on May 24, 1922, in Monticello, IA, the daughter of William and Nellie (Redmond) Schlimmer. She was educated at Sacred Heart School in Monticello and later was trained as a nurse’s aide in Chicago. She married Wilbur McChristy on September 19, 1942. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1997.
Clara worked for many years at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque as a desk clerk in Pediatrics, retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Raphael’s Cathedral and a BVM Associate. For over 20 years she enjoyed doing volunteer work at Mercy Medical Center, Mt. Carmel, and St. Raphael’s Cathedral. In 1995 she was awarded the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award for her many hours of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and reading.
Clara is survived by her son Larry (Jean) of Dubuque, a grandson Doug (Karin) of Minneapolis, MN, a great-grandson Keith of Minneapolis, and her step-grandchildren Chris Corbett (Erika) of Madison, WI, and Anne Pace (Scott) and their children Cameron and Carter of Little Rock, AR. Also surviving are a brother-in-law Paul Marsh and sisters-in-law Betty and Elenor Schlimmer and many nieces and nephews, who she loved dearly, especially Nanci, as well as good friends at St. Mary’s. And, of course, Millie, her grand-puppy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, and 2 sisters-in-law.
Since Clara has donated her body to the University of Iowa hospitals for medical research, burial will be at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Monticello, IA.
