Rita Jeanette Schmitt, 84, of Dubuque passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at home surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 8 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-7p.m., Thursday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road where a wake service will take place at 6:30 p.m.
Rita was born on February 26, 1930 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Udelhoven) Siegert.
She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and was employed at Resurrection Church, Montgomery Wards, and the Milk House.
Rita married Charles Robert Schmitt on July 17, 1951 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. They were blessed with a wonderful marriage and had just celebrated 63 years together.
Rita was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished time spent with her family and adored her grandchildren. She was always ready for a lively game of euchre and looked forward to going out dancing with Charlie or her family and friends. She had countless friendships and treasured each one dearly.
Rita had a zest for life that was contagious and unmatched. She was an inspiration for all of her children, grandchildren and everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. Rita had a quick wit and loved to tell a great story.
Surviving is her husband, Charles; children, Janet (Rich) Bales, Jim (Ann) Schmitt, Joe (Geri) Schmitt, and Jeff (Deb) Schmitt; Grandchildren, Shawna (Christopher) Donar, Trista (Steve) Calonder, Michael (Fiancé Kimberly) Willey, Kalen (Randi) Bales, Katie (Rob) Peterson, Gina Schmitt, Madeline Schmitt, Eric (Stacey) Schmitt, Nick (Megan) Schmitt, Ali Schmitt and Anna Schmitt, Alex Schmitt and Sam Schmitt; great- grandchildren, Emma, Cael, Austin, Aidan, Nathanial, Ethan, Noah, Hannah, Ellie, Grace, Sophie, Aurelia, Charlie, Lilly, Noah Lee and Jacob; sister and dear friend, Edna Schiel and brother in laws, Robert and Herb (Lorraine) Schmitt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; along with siblings, Walter, Earl, Joseph "Sonny", Leonard, Marie Kress, Eileen Bahl, and brother- in-laws Louis and Lester Schmitt
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque.
