Obituary for LeVon A Althaus (Hanig)

LeVon A Althaus (Hanig)
Our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was so very loving, lovable, and loved, LeVon Agnes Althaus, age 91, of Assisi Village, Dubuque, IA. died peacefully, Thursday, August 7, 2014. She was the beloved wife of Herbert for 55 years; and devoted mother of DiAnn Rooney (Terry) of Lincoln, CA; Dennis (Jean Ann) of Dubuque; Roger (Sharon) and Linda Kemp-Weretka of Phoenix, AZ; Judi Bartell; Herb Jr.; and Harry (Mary), Rick (Patty), and Kevin (Joan), all of Dubuque. She is also survived by son-in-law Richard Bartell.

She is preceded in death by Herb, a daughter Judi Bartell, and son Herbert Jr.; grandchildren Sonya and Keegan Althaus and Jennifer Bartell; Daughter-in-law Kimberly (Gisel) Althaus; Son-in-law George Weretka; as well as three sisters, Evelyn Kunkel, Maxine Zuber, and Bernadine Diehl.

Lovingly known as NanaBon, she was the cherished grandmother of 19, and proud great-grandmother of 24. LeVon was born Jan. 13th, 1923 in Wesley, IA, daughter of Jacob and Clara Hanig. She graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque, IA after the early deaths of both parents.

She and Herb were former residents of Holy Trinity and St. Columbkille’s parishes in Dubuque, and the retirement villages of Horseshoe Bend, AK and Sun City, AZ. While she and Herb lived in Arkansas, she worked in retail management at one of the early WalMart stores. LeVon moved to Assisi Village in 2012.

Her family wishes to extend special appreciation and gratitude to the nurses and staff of Assisi Village, Stonehill Care Center and Dubuque Hospice for their kind care and support in the last years and weeks of her life.

Throughout her life, LeVon had a deep devotion to her Catholic faith, supported many Catholic charities, and was a life long member of the Legion of Mary. She was proud of being able to lead the daily recitation of the Rosary at Assisi Village.

LeVon will be remembered for her sense of humor, generosity, positive outlook on life, love of family and friends, friendly and outgoing personality, which she was proud of passing on to her family. She had joy for the simpler things of life and loved playing dominoes and card games, especially Euchre. After the death of Herb in 1999, she lived as an example to all on how to continue as the matriarch of a large and loving family.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 2 pm -8 pm, Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home & Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Rd. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2014 at Holy Spirit Parish-Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in LeVon's memory.
