James C. Odefey, 73, of Red Oak, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, died Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.
Jim was born September 1, 1940 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Herbert and Mabel (Brown) Odefey. He married Paula Schnorernberg on July 27, 1968 in Dubuque.
He served in the US Army during the Viet Nam War with the 85th Evac. supporting the 82nd Airborne and 1st Cav. They established the first field hospital in Quinhon South Viet Nam.
Jim worked as a nurse anesthetist for 45 years until his retirement in 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Odefey of Red Oak, Iowa; a son, Chad (Misti) Odefey of Rainbow City, Alabama and their children, Nicholas, Andrew and Paige; a daughter, Shannon Marshall of Battle Creek, Michigan and her children, Demmy, Jalyn and Ethan; seven siblings, Mary Lou (Don) Schemmel, Bill (Barb) Odefey, Jan (Jerry) Deutmeyer, Jerry (Mary) Odefey, Donna (Jim) Hosier, Gary (Nancy) Odefey and Debbie (Jeff) Hurd; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ron Odefey.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established by the family.
