Obituary for Mark F Murphy

Mark F Murphy
Mark Francis Murphy, 31, formerly of Dubuque, died on November 13, 2014 at his home in Manassas Va.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Arnold Flater officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5th at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road or from 9:45 to 10:45 on December 6th at Holy Trinity. Mark will be buried beside his father in Emmetsburg, Iowa at a later date.

Mark was born on August 28, 1983 in Dubuque, the son of James W. and Gail (Niewoehner) Murphy. He graduated from Hempstead High School in 2002. Mark was recognized as a State of Iowa Scholar and received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Mark graduated from Iowa State University in 2006 with a B. S. in computer science. In June, 2006, he began working for Lockheed Martin in Manassas, VA. Mark worked in the International Submarine Lab and had been promoted to Senior Software Engineer earlier this year. He had recently been recognized by Lockheed with a Special Recognition Award for his work on the Netherlands submarine project. While working at Lockheed, he also attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and received a M.S. degree in computer science in 2012.

Mark was a quiet, kind, thoughtful and intelligent young man who loved reading, video games, and keeping up on current events and politics. He really enjoyed computer science because, as he said, “I can create something out of nothing.”

Mark is survived by his mother, Gail Murphy, and sister, Sara Murphy (Josh McClain), both of Dubuque. Survivors also include his aunts and uncles: Jack and Randa Niewoehner of Elkader; Steven (Rita Ficarra-Yousett) Niewoehner of Cedar Falls, and Kathy Niewoehner (Clair McDermott) of Los Angeles, CA; Jerry and Ellie Murphy, Tom and Judy Murphy, and Joe & Jeanne Murphy, all of Emmetsburg and Sharon Santy of Fond du Lac, WI. He is also survived by many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Murphy, his grandparents, Frank and Lela Murphy of Emmetsburg, and LaVerne and LaVera Niewoehner of Elkader, and his uncle and aunt, Robert and Terry Murphy of Albuquerque.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and co-workers.

The family would like to thank Mark’s friends and co-workers at Lockheed Martin for all their help in Manassas. Thank you also to all our friends and neighbors in Dubuque for their love,
Order Flowers
