Obituary for Nancy Lee Kalnes (Sullivan)

Passed away at home on Sunday December 14, 2014 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her husband, daughters, sisters and grandchildren.

Nancy was born August 23rd, 1938 in Chicago Illinois, to John N. and Arlene Narducy Sullivan where she graduated from St Augustine high school in 1956.

In her 20s, Nancy met Frank S. Kalnes and they were married June 30th, 1962. Nancy and Frank moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and started their family. They moved back to Chicago in 1967 to be closer to family.

In Chicago, Nancy wrote a column for the Southwest Clearing newspaper, attended St. Rene’s church where she and Frank volunteered yearly for the fundraiser, Showtime. Nancy was a good singer and an even better dancer.

In 1976, Nancy, Frank and the girls moved to Dubuque, Iowa. While raising her children, Nancy worked as an Associate for the Dubuque Community School District for 25 years. She undertook the challenge of Volunteer Coordinator at ARC from 1978 to 1982 where students from Wahlert High School worked with disabled adults. Nancy was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years.

Nancy was an avid Chicago Bulls and Bears fan, she loved to travel with her family and sisters, and took grandchildren to Walt Disney World many times.

Nana will be missed by her husband Frank of 51 years, her daughters Kelly and Kristyn, her and pride and joy grandchildren Shawn, Daniel and Emily Wagner, siblings Carole Sullivan, Terri Maybaum and Richard Sullivan, her many nieces and nephews, and wonderful close friends.

She is proceeded in death by her parents Arlene Narducy and John Sullivan, in-laws Frank and Lorraine Kalnes, brother-in-law Charles Maybaum, and sister-in-law Christine Sullivan.

The Kalnes family is grateful to Hospice of Dubuque and to close family friend, Barbara Trimble, for all their help with Nancy’s journey.

The service will be held Saturday, December 20th, at 11am in the chapel at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 87th Street & Hamlin Ave., Evergreen Park, IL.
