Obituary for Pauline M Henkel (Frye)

Pauline M Henkel (Frye)
Pauline Mary (Frye) Henkel, 98, died January 30, 2015 at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, IA.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tues., Feb. 3 at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 -7 p.m., Monday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road.
She was born Pauline Mary Frye on May 23, 1916 in Highland, WI, to William and Elizabeth (Stitz) Frye. After attending St. Anthony’s Grade School in Highland she moved to Dubuque, IA, and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1933. She was a member of St. Patrick’s and Sacred Heart Parishes throughout her lifetime.
Pauline married Captain Jerome S. Henkel on November 25, 1939. They resided in Dubuque with their children, Barbara Ann, Terrance Thomas, Elizabeth Louise, and Paula Marie.
Being married to a river captain meant that her husband was gone every other month for a month at a time. She was an independent woman in charge of household decisions and finances in a time when men ran households and women cleaned them. Pauline would joke that her husband may be the Captain, but she was the Admiral. She made a house a home, made her children feel loved, and was a friend to many. She loved bowling, penny poker with the ladies, playing Euchre or cribbage, singing songs from broadway musicals, and getting together with family. She was an active participant in her children’s lives, everything from scouts to sports, she would be there. She loved to laugh but could never get a punch line right.
Surviving and missing her are Barbara Ann (Henkel) and Robert Dague, Elizabeth (Henkel) and Allen Wagner, Paula (Henkel) Baker, and a daughter-in-law Kay Henkel. In addition Pauline has 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pauline’s husband, Jerome, died on July 28, 1981. Also preceding her in death, an infant son Gerald, infant twin daughters Kimberly and Kathleen; sisters Margaret (Frye) Dostal and Agnes (Frye) McAllister; brothers Karl and William, and son, Terry.
A Pauline Henkel Memorial Fund has been established.
