Obituary for John E Wright Sr.

John E Wright Sr.
John E. Wright Sr., 86, of 508 W. Locust Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 at home.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 14 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road. Friends may call from 12- 1 p.m., Saturday at the Funeral Home, where Military Honors will be accorded at 12:30 p.m. by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. A reception will follow at the First Baptist Church, 2143 Judson Drive, Dubuque.

John was born on September 2, 1928 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of George and Viola (Dobbins) Wright. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High and lived in Dubuque most of his life.

He married Norma Wilbur on Nov. 19, 1949 in Reno, Nevada while he was serving in the Navy during the Korean War.

John was employed at Dubuque’s original cable company as an installer and troubleshooter for over 30 years.

He was most well-known for more than 40 years of involvement with Dubuque's bowling community as a bowling coach for juniors (Imperial Lanes, Riverside and Creslanes), a league officer, a member of the 700 bowling club, a director and then President of the Dubuque Men’s Bowling Association, and secretary of the Dubuque Junior Bowling League. He was inducted into the Dubuque USBC Men’s Bowling Association’s Hall of Fame in 2002.

John was an avid Chicago Cubs fan from the womb. His mother went to games before he was born, took him to games from his earliest memories, and taught him to score games before he could read. He stayed faithful through the many highs and lows of Cubs baseball and will undoubtedly be at Wrigley Field this season, too.

John was a true Dubuquer; he loved playing euchre with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his children: Norma (Tom) Pellett and Grace Mendez, both of Dubuque, John Jr. (Kathie) Wright, of Hampton, VA., Charles (Doreen Joan) Wright, of Kenosha, WI., and Samuel (Cheri) Wright of Farley; daughter-in-law, Suzie Wright; 17 grandchildren, 38 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; daughter, Jacquline Louise; 2 grandchildren, his parents; and brother, George Wright, Jr.
