Obituary for Mary Edith Schweitzer (Cox)

Mary Edith Cox Schweitzer died on February 26, 2015, at the age of 94.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 2, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 10th and Locust Streets. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be held at the church before the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary was born on February 5, 1921, in Hannibal, Missouri, daughter of Mary Margaret Fowler and John Franklin Samuel Cox. She married Charles Schweitzer, her high school sweetheart, on January 31, 1945, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death on April 12, 2014.

Mary and Charles moved to Dubuque in December 1946 when Charles was hired by John Deere Tractor Works. Together they raised three daughters – Constance, Deborah, and Pamela. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and doting great-grandmother.

Mary enjoyed boating on the Mississippi, agate hunting, bird watching, and her beloved perennial and rose gardens. In 1954, she joined First Congregational Church where she served on many boards and committees.

Mary is survived by her daughters Constance (Donald) Cherba and Deborah (Donald) Otto of Dubuque and Dr. Pamela (Brandt Richardson) Schweitzer of Monona, Iowa; granddaughters Jennifer (Brent) Schwan of Austin, Texas, Mary (Chris) Ashkar of San Diego, Valerie (Chris) Loewenberg, Elizabeth (Justin) Kuhle, and Julia Bickel of Dubuque; and great-grandchildren Samuel and Joseph Ashkar, Lilly, Hayden, and Gwenyth Loewenberg, and Gunner, Harvey, and Norman Kuhle; brothers William and Junior Cox; and special nieces Deidre (David) Klassen and Linda (Willis) Robbins.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Beulah Krigbaum, Anna Mae Huggins, and Dorothy Marshall and brothers Ennis, Leslie, Gordon, Gilbert, Chester, Clarence, and James Cox.
