Obituary for Bernard P. Merges

Bernard Merges 95, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Stonehill Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at St. Catherine Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 3:00 p.m.

Bernard was born on February 22, 1920 on the family farm near St. Catherine, the son of Peter and Catherine (Muenster) Merges. He farmed for many years and also worked at the Dubuque Cheese Factory. Bernard will be remembered for his wit, kindness and positive personality. Children and animals held a special place in his heart. He was very proud of his Luxemburg heritage. His family, friends and caregivers will miss his smile and sense of humor.

Surviving are his brother, Aloysius of Dubuque; his very special grand nephew, Keith Kane of Dubuque; his sister-in-law Ruth Merges of Dubuque; his nieces and nephews, Marian Kane of Key West, Paul (Inez) Merges and Francis (Jane) Merges both of Peosta, John (Shelia) Merges, Frank (Eileen) Merges and Rosemary (John) Schreiber all of Dubuque, Dorothy (Leon) Steines of Bernard, Teri (Gene) Hohmann of St. Catherine and Ed (Nancy) Merges of Sherrill; also surviving are many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Catherine; 8 siblings, Catherine, Barbara, John, Florence, Peter, Frank, Agatha and Henry; his sister-in-law Veronica Merges and 2 nephews, Edmund Merges and Don Kane.

A Bernard Merges memorial fund has been established.
