Donald L Callahan
Donald L. "Jeep" Callahan 66, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at UnityPoint Finley Hospital following a long and courageous battle with several illnesses. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. with Deacon David McGhee officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid, Iowa. Friends may call from 3:00 - 8:00 Monday, April 20, 2015 at the funeral home.
Don was born on May 5, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Lester and Lillian (McDermott) Callahan. He worked at Giese Roofing for many years and then became self employed as everyone's favorite handyman. He could fix and somehow make any job work. His skills were endless and would always be first to show up when someone needed help and the last to leave.
Don was a true Irishman who loved to be outside fishing and listening to "good" music. He had more fun in life than anyone could hope for. No matter the situation, he always had a contagious smile on his face.
Don was a man everyone could learn from. He didn't need or want many things. Most important to him was his wonderful family and his many great friends. He was the best father, grandfather and brother who would do anything for his family with unconditional love. Most of all, Don loved his grandchildren. He spent most of his time figuring out how to be one step ahead of them and participating in creative activities, such as gardening, cooking and making homemade ice cream.
Don's big heart and skillful knowledge has touched so many people, and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Surviving are his son Allen (Carolyn) Callahan of Dubuque and their children Chris, Cody and Ashley; his daughter, Lisa (Dan "Buck Jr.") Steve of Dubuque and their children McKinzee and Kassidee; his brother, Dan "Buck" (Barb) Callahan; his sisters, Elaine Gansen, Juanita Bakey, Becky (Terry) Lyons, Deb (Alvin Wernimont) Callahan of Dubuque and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kay Reardon; brother-in-laws Bill Gansen and Jerry Bakey and his long time companion, Marilynn Jurisic.
A Donald L. Callahan memorial fund has been established.
Don's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Wendt Center; Drs. Ward, Arnz, Hermann, Benda and Coos and the caring staff and doctors at UnityPoint Finley Hospital.
