Condolence: I had the privilege of being one of Mr. Fischer's students during his years as a substitute. We all loved seeing him come in with his Stanley thermos--not because he was an "easy" sub, but because he was always so kind to us. No matter what we were going through, he met us with kindness and understanding.

I graduated more than 20 years ago now and live thousands of miles from Dubuque, and Mr. Fischer crossed my mind. I think that says a lot about the impact he had on so many of us, that we remember him by name and his kindness, even after all these years.

I'm so glad I got to be among his students, and I'll remember him fondly for the rest of my life.

Condolence: I taught with John at Dubuque Senior High for many years and knew him afterward as a substitute teacher. I have been susbstituting for 14 years. I will not match his 21 years. His service to young people and our school is unmatched in longevity. Hard worker, gregarious personality, great guy to be around. My sympathies to the family.

Condolence: John and my Dad, David McCarron, were responsible for almost everything built in or on our hoomes in Illinois and New York. What a pleasure it was to have John visit! We would walk through the cemetary every night after dinner and his work ethic was unmatched. I know he will be in good company with everyone who has gone before him. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful man with our family!

Condolence: Liz and Jackie,
I enjoyed knowing and caring for your dad during his years in Marshalltown. He remained positive and gregarious through his decline. H e quickly became a friend. I am sorry for your loss and I am sorry I can not join you in Dubuque.
