Obituary for Joseph A Wanger
Joseph A. Wanger, 81, of Dubuque died Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 pm Sunday at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy road Where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30. Funeral Mass will be 1 pm Monday at Holy Spirit Parish-Sacred Heart with the Rev. Kyle Digman officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League immediately following at the church.
Joseph was born August 19, 1933 in Dubuque, son of Albert and Pearl (Noonan) Wanger.
He graduated from Loras Academy in 1953. While at Loras Academy he was active in ROTC. He then served with the 5th Armored Division under Major General William Mitchell in Berlin, Germany.
He worked for 39 years at Dubuque Packing Co. and FDL Foods.
In 1978 he married his soul mate, Maxine Dodds.
He was a lifetime member of Amvets post 3, the Dubuque Boat Club and Moose Lodge #355 of Dubuque. He enjoyed 55 years at his cottage in Waupeton and also enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Church, where he was baptized as an infant.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Wanger of Dubuque; children, Brad (Mary) Licht of Andrew, Iowa, Michele Beyer of Epworth, Melanie (Dennis) Primising of Cedar Rapids, and Melodie (Tom) Schueller of Maquoketa; 13 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren; sisters Virginia Maurer of St. Helena, Calif. and Shirley Noggle of Dubuque, and 12 special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Brent; his parents, two sisters and their husbands, Betty and Joe Takes and Mary and Jack Wagner; two brothers in law, Cy Maurer and Don Noggle; and a son in law, David Beyer.
The family would like to thank Drs. Salas, Wahlen, and Oppert, as well as the nurses and staff at Finley Hospital fourth floor for their care.
