Obituary for Gerald S Brandel

Gerald (Dewey) S. Brandel, 76, of Dubuque, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at Bethany Home after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 12 at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church. The burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post #6. Friends are invited to give condolences to the family from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 10 at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and
Crematory, 2695 Kennedy Rd, Dubuque.

Dewey was born on November 2, 1938 in Dubuque, son of Lenny and Kate (Freund) Brandel. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958. On June 10, 1961, he married Bernice Klaas in Kieler, Wisconsin. Together they celebrate 54 years of marriage.

Dewey worked for John Deere in Dubuque for over 30 years, and remained in contact with fellow retirees and friends during weekly coffee outings.

Dewey enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, and spending time on the Mississippi River. He loved to travel, and he and Bernice wintered in Florida and other southern states for many years. He also loved country and western music, and played guitar in a band for several years.
Dewey was a selfless person, who was always there to help his family and friends. He always had a smile on his face, and would make a joke to lighten a situation. Dewey was a devoted and loving husband, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Bernice; children Lori (Mike) Stecher of Dubuque, Debbie (Pat) Conry of Phoenix, AZ, and Roger (Laura) Brandel of Apple Vally, MN; grandchildren Dillion, Audrey, Dallas, and Valerie Stecher, Courtney (Jason) Gambaiani, Casey Conry, and Hannah, Tessa, and Jenna Brandel; great grandson Drake Gambaiani; brothers Jack (Jane), Bob (Carol), and Tim (Deb) Brandel all of Dubuque, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jane (Les) Hansel, and father and mother in law Elmer and Mary Klaas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethany Home in Dubuque.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Bethany Home for their loving care over the past year.
