Bob was born on September 26, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Leo B. and Helen (Ott) Schlueter. He graduated from Loras Academy and Loras College.

Bob loved baseball, bowling and golf. He started playing organized ball for his father in his early teens, and went on to play for years with the Dubuque White Sox and Dubuque Star Brewers, two of the premier semi-pro teams in the area during the 1940’s and 1950’s. He also played minor league baseball for one year for the Janesville, WI. affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, where an elbow injury cut his professional baseball career short. He enjoyed singing, and was a member of numerous local choirs throughout his life.

On May 9, 1959, Bob married Ellen Walsh at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque.
Bob joined the Schlueter Insurance Agency with his father and Uncle Frank Schlueter, in 1949. He was eventually joined in the agency by his brother Tom, and went on to become President of the firm. Along with Cy Friedman and Ted Ellsworth, they formed the local Independent Insurance Agents of Dubuque Association in 1953, an organization that exists to this day.

He was active in many fund raising drives, including Stonehill Care Center, The American Cancer Society, Wahlert High School and Loras College.
