Robert J  Carroll
Robert John Carroll of Dubuque, Iowa, died April 24, 2016. He was a resident of Stonehill Care Center and formerly of Applewood Apartments.
The visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Monday, May 2, at 4:00 p.m., with funeral mass beginning at 5:00 p.m. Immediately following the funeral service, there will be a remembrance celebration at the National Mississippi River Museum (paddle boat building) until 8:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will be take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, is assisting the family.
Robert was born on January 23, 1936, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, the son of Robert S. and Marion A. (Flanagan) Carroll.
He served our country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958.
Robert was joined in marriage with his former spouse, Anita Mae (Robinson) Carroll on July 27, 1963, in Waukon, Iowa. He attended the court reporting program at the Minnesota School of Business, graduating in 1968, and served as a freelance and official reporter for 30 years in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities. Retiring and subsequently relocating to Dubuque in 1996 Robert followed his true passion for history as an Educator at the National Mississippi River Museum. He looked forward each day to working with all generations who visited and toured the building and the William M. Black dredge boat, which became his specialty. An avid writer he was a frequent contributor to many newspaper and magazine columns throughout his life. His faith in God was paramount to how he lived his life, which expressed itself in worship and ministry to those in need in many different church communities throughout his life. A lifelong Roman Catholic, he also associated himself as an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque.
Surviving are his children, Robert Thomas (Dennis Melchi) Carroll of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Patrice (Terry) Murray of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Patrick David (William Lison) Carroll of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Michael John (Brett Patten) Carroll of McAllen, Texas; grandchildren, Brittany Murray and Patterson Murray; and siblings, Mary Catherine (Dick) DeLaubenfels of Portland, Oregon, and Michael Carroll of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former spouse, Anita (Robinson) Carroll; sister, Patricia (Robert) Gilbert; and sister-in-law, Hannlore Carroll.
