Obituary for Jean Ann Kernall (Kotz)

Jean A. Kernall, 82, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3 at St. Joseph the Worker. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd, Dubuque.

Jean was born on March 13, 1934 in Worthington, Iowa, to George and Dora (Klein) Kotz. She graduated from St. Paul Catholic School in Worthington. On April 23, 1955, she married Gene Kernall at St. Paul Catholic Church.

In early years and high school she played the piano and was in a school group chosen to take part in musical events in Des Moines and other Iowa cities.

To say she had a working career would not be inaccurate. She worked in Dr. Risser’s office in Maquoketa, Iowa, in addition to thirty plus years in the accounting offices of Midland Lab and Medical Associates in Dubuque.

After marriage her world was centered on family and friends. There would be many travels in the United States, Canada and Mexico. She had many interests and was a constant reader and had a special fondness and talent for baking. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Cubs fan. As a method of keeping in touch Jean phoned relatives and friends over the last several years to sing them a “Happy Birthday Greeting”. When illness prevented some calls the intended parties would call to make sure she was okay.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Gene; their children Karen (John) Freiburger, Scott (Rachel) Kernall, and Kris (Mary) Kernall; grandchildren Michael (Shawna) Freiburger, Erin (Tony) Runde, Alexis and Brandon Avenarius, and Ramsey and Ty Kernall; great grand-children; Charlie, Fiona and Claire, a brother Vince (Maggie) Kotz; and sister in law Madeline Kotz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Les, Gerald, Melvin, Albert and Loras; and sisters Mary Theresa Burns and Rita Simon.

A Jean A. Kernall Memorial Fund has been established.
