Obituary for Lorraine H Scherf

Lorraine Helen Scherf, 94, formerly of 711 O’Neill St, died Tuesday morning, August 16, 2016, at Sunset Park Place in Dubuque. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 20 at Grace Point Church with Rev. Christopher English officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd, Dubuque. Friends may also call from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., Saturday at the church.

Lorraine was born on August 15, 1922 in Dubuque, daughter of Otto and Mathilda (Dambacher) Kulow. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1940 and married Eugene “Shorty” Scherf on August 8, 1942.

Before her marriage, she worked at Sorbo’s making infant clothing. Later, she worked at Eagle Food Store on Elm St from 1956 to 1960. She also worked at Sears Roebuck and Betty Jane Candy Store. She went back to work at Eagles on Asbury and Kennedy Road in 1964 until retiring in 1967.

She as a member of Grace Point Church. She volunteered in the women’s sewing group and worked with the kitchen crew making food for the euchre parties. She was also a member of the Golden Oldies and the Red Hat Society and volunteered at the Dubuque Rescue Mission, sorting clothing and serving meals.

Lorraine enjoyed sewing and quilting and made quilts for her grandchildren. She enjoyed taking bus tours after her retirement and collecting cups and saucers from her travels. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and looked forward to family dinners and holiday meals.

Surviving are her daughter, J’Neane (Kent) Briden and son Tom (Mary) Scherf both of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Alyssa (John) Irby of Fredericksburg, VA, Jonathan Briden of Dubuque, and Sara and Carolyn Scherf of Dubuque; and two great grandchildren Jocelyn and David Irby.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene; and infant daughter in 1946; and siblings John and Marion Kulow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Grace Point Church or a favorite charity of choice.
