Obituary for Ethel R Mauer (Hunstad)

Ethel R. Mauer, 96, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at Bethany Home on Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:15 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at church.

Ethel was born on Nov. 27, 1920, in Waterville, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Julia (Hanson) Hunstad. She and her family moved to Dubuque when she was five. However, she and her older sister Laurayne spent many happy summers with their Aunt Annie and Uncle Henry Jensen on their farm near Waterville. It was there she developed her love of cats and many were a part of her life.

She met Verne Mauer at various church activities and they were married on September 27, 1942 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque.

She was a life-long learner and valued education for herself and her children. She also enjoyed working with children as a para professional at Jackson and Marshall Schools. Ethel was creative and organized and took leadership roles in P.T.A. and many church activities. She began piano lessons in second grade and by junior high was able to accompany groups at school and church. In retirement years, she and Verne enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling to Europe, as well as around the United States.

Her family benefited from her cooking, baking, and preserving the produce from the large family garden. She was an excellent seamstress and created clothing that ranged from pjs to coats to wedding dresses. Ethel also filled her time with knitting, crocheting, and craft projects. Unfortunately, in her seventies she lost her eyesight quickly and was no longer able to do any of these favorite pastimes.

Surviving Ethel are children, Edythe (Paul) Puls, Janet (Edward) McEvoy , both of Dubuque, Ruth (John) Schaefer, of Potosi, WI, and Lori (David) Hardin, of Cedar Rapids, IA; nine grandchildren, Janann (Alan) Dostal, Steven (Stephanie) Puls, Dr. Malinda (Andrew Gresham) Schaefer, Anna (Derek) Nagreen, Elizabeth “Beth” (Brenton) Twite, Rachael (Jason) Berthiaume, Alan Lohff, Aaron Lohff, and Alanna Lohff; four great-grandchildren, Kalea Dostal, Liam Dostal, Michael Puls, and Adelaide Nagreen.; two brothers, James Hunstad of Davenport, IA, and Vernon Hunstad of Cedar Rapids, IA; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on September 26, 2008; son, Richard Mauer on October 6, 2014; parents; step-mother Leona (Leliefeld) Hunstad; sister, Laurayne Sutton; brother, Robert Hunstad.
Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Bethany Home, or Christian Crusaders Radio Ministry at PO Box 522, Cedar Falls, IA, 50613.

Ethel's family would like to thank Dr. Regan Wolbers, the staff at Bethany, and the many others who were so kind and caring to Mom.
