John Alan Bosveld, 74, passed away on the afternoon of October 17th, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Geriatric Center in Mason City, Iowa from complications of leading a full and rewarding life.
Funeral services were held in Mason City, IA. Committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8 at the Mueller Memorial Chapel in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
John was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on August 7th 1940 to Louis and Bernice (Schalekamp) Bosveld. After moving to Mason City, Iowa John graduated from Mason City High School received an Associate’s Degree from Mason City Junior College, a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Iowa and throughout his life pursued additional education at Bozeman State University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
Above all else, John was an educator. He was a Science and Math teacher for over 40 years starting his career in the Columbus Junction School in 1962. For the majority of his career John taught Chemistry at Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa where he had the opportunity to work with generations of students in the classroom, as a mentor, and coach. After 28 years of teaching at Hempstead from 1969 to 1997 John retired from full time teaching but continued to work with students as a Substitute Teacher until 2006
John sang in the Dubuque Chorale for over 20 years and had the opportunity to travel with the Chorale on several overseas tours. He was an avid reader with a love for non-fiction Biographies and histories. In addition, John was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, and a retired member of the National Science Teachers Association, National Education Association, and the Iowa Education Association.
John is survived by sons Paul (Mary Clark) Bosveld, Dubuque, IA and Mark (Jeanette Loebach) Bosveld Marshall, MN, Grandsons Sean Bosveld, Ben Bosveld, Tyler Bosveld, and Alex Bosveld all of Dubuque, IA, Granddaughter, Michaela Bosveld of Marshall, MN and 5 Great-Grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Bernice Bosveld and a brother, James Bosveld.
