Obituary for Donald J Carlson

Donald J. Carlson 93, of Bethany Home and formerly of 560 Woodland Ridge, died Sunday, August 30, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Hal Murray officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corp League.
Friends may call Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

Donald was born in Minneapolis, MN, the son of immigrants Frank and Odina (Bye) Carlson. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Donald was an Army pilot during WWII having flown an A 20G Havoc on 55 missions in the South Pacific. In 1949, Donald moved to Dubuque and started his career with Interstate Power Company; he retired 36 years later. He married Joan Anderson in 1953. She preceded him in death in 1985. Donald married Sharon Stickley in 1986 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, VFW, Mason Blue Lodge & Consistory and Westminster Presbyterian Church. He served as Vice President and board member of Interstate Power Company, board member of Luther Manor and Mt. Pleasant Home. Donald's favorite past times were golfing, playing bridge, entertaining, gardening, traveling and computers.

Surviving are his wife Sharon; his children Deborah (Barry) Blair, Thomas (Nancy) Winne, Eric "Skip" (Shelley) Winne, Susan (Jay) Powers and Sherry (Randall) Brown; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 nephews; 1 niece and a sister-in-law Dottie Anderson of Rice Lake, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife Joan; 2 brothers Bob and Bill Carlson; 1 sister Eleanor Detra and a brother-in-law Dick Anderson.

Donald's family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Bethany Home and Hospice of Dubuque.
