Walter was born on January 7, 1927 in Dubuque, son of Edward and Frieda (Kurtz) Gau. At the

the Dubuque Community School District after retiring from the Dubuque Pack. He was a
generous member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

Wally had a variety of interests – boating, fishing, golf, baseball, and traveling around the United
States in the family camper. He was an avid San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan.
Above all else,

Walter was a devoted family man in which his wife and kids always came first in
his life. He was a loving husband, giving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Hosier, Nick (Deb) Gau, Nancy (Tom) Reed, Laura Clay, and Charlie (Diane) Gau, all of
Dubuque; grandchildren Nadine and Wally Rusk, Cali and Jason Hosier, Kirstie Lucio in
Loveland CO, Savanna Splinter, Courtney Gau, Andy and Tony Reed, Cameron and Mariah
Clay and Jordan Gau; great grandchildren, Isabella, Hannah, Ava, Jessa of Loveland, CO, and
Evan, Noah, and Owen; and his sister Lil (Carl) Chandler. Also left behind was Wally’s small
canine companion, Bella.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Esther (Mike) Hogan, brother Eugene “Tex”
(Catherine) Gau,

Walter Louis Gau sent monthly donations to the Disabled American Veterans, the Red Cross and
the Salvation Army. Monetary donations made to these institutions or to St. Joseph the Worker
Catholic Church (60 S Algona St, Dubuque, IA 52001) in his honor would be greatly
appreciated.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital as well as the
emergency medical personnel for the excellent care that they gave during this time.
