Obituary for Myrtle M Meyer (Gritti)

Myrtle M Meyer (Gritti)
Myrt Meyer, 92, walked the length of her days here on Earth in Dubuque, Iowa, and now she has reached her heavenly goal. An angel now, and an angel all her life, Myrt was loved by all who crossed her path, cherished by those fortunate enough to truly know her. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 23 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where friends may greet the family from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery.

She was born on June 28, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa, of Dominic and Martha (Papenthien Gritti). She was preceded in death by her loving husband Marvin and her siblings Anna Gritti, Marie Koehler, Dorothy Horn, Arnold Gritti, Irene Bowman, Mildred Juergens, and Myrt’s twin brother John Gritti. She was close to her in-laws – Paul Koehler, Fritz Horn, Pearl Gritti, Mervin Bowman, Jerry Juergens, & Doris Gritti; and Vernon & Catherine Meyer, Robert & Rosemary Meyer, and Ruth Meyer – and her many nieces and nephews. Yet the apples of her eye were her beloved husband Marvin (married November 27, 1954, in Fort Dodge, Iowa) her adoring daughters Andrea (husband Mark Samek) of Garwin, Iowa, and Barbara (husband Chadly Koppenhaver) of Minneapolis, and her grandson Joshua Samek, of San Diego. The family credo has always been “blessed beyond belief.”

Myrt was famous for her positive outlook, her sweet spirit, and her constant faith in God and His power in her life and the lives of those around her. A moment in her presence always made a person feel better, valued, loved. She was a woman who held no grudges, passed no judgments, believed only the best in all. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1941 and stayed in touch with many of her classmates for the rest of her life. Her church family at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dubuque was a crucial element to her daily life for her entire adulthood, and she was raised in the nurturing environment of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, also in Dubuque.

An avid and talented bowler, she was in a local league for many years and was called upon to challenge professional bowlers who passed through Dubuque. By the standards of society her work included the front desk at the YMCA in the late 1940s and office work at Farley and Loetscher’s and John Deere, all in Dubuque, but her true service and passion were given to her family and her friends, for whom she always had time and love. There is a tremendous void now in the place she occupied in so many visceral ways, but her love and inspiration live on in all who knew her. Praise God from whom all blessings flow, and from whom Myrtle sprang to spread grace in this world!

Donations may be made to the wonderful places that lovingly shepherded her on her way: Luther Manor Nursing Home (http://www.luthermanor.com/donations/) and Hospice of Dubuque (http://www.hospiceofdubuque.org/cms-view-page.php?page=donate). Myrt’s family will be forever grateful for the marvelous care she received from these fine institutions.
