Obituary for Nellie M Mayne (Koehne)

Nellie Mae Mayne, 87, of Luther Manor Retirement Community, formerly of 383 Locust St., went to sleep in the arms of her Lord on Sunday, March 6, 2011.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 3200 Asbury Road, where friends may call from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Services will be held by the Women of the Moose following committal services. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1923, on a farm near Earlville, Iowa, daughter of Emma and Frank Koehne. The family moved to a farm near the Delaware Cemetery. She attended school in Oneida. She attended Bayless Business School.

Nellie worked for Stanley Home Products until they moved their offices to Chicago. She enjoyed working part-time for a couple of the Fourth Street shops.

She married Willis Hogan Mayne on June 28, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville; he preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1952.

Nellie was enrolled as a charter member of the Women of the Moose on Nov. 14, 1946, actively serving in various offices throughout the years. She was the last-surviving charter member. Nellie also was a longtime member of the local Wa-Tan-Ye organization. She served as vice president for many, many years and looked forward to attending their conventions each year. She looked forward each month to quilting with the ladies at St. Luke's Methodist Church and to attending the OWLS and Senior Fellowship luncheons at St. Peter. She was part of the Ecumenical Emmaus Community in Dubuque.

As a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Nellie served as an altar servant. While she still drove, she and Roberta Meyer enjoyed delivering the altar flowers to various shut-ins. She was part of the original Stephen Minister group at St. Peter, which was started more than 20 years ago. She faithfully served as a Stephen Minister and attended every supervision and continuing-education session.

High on her list of interests was traveling, and Nellie did that whenever she could. While she was able, she visited many areas of the United States, even Hawaii. In recent years, although her travels were limited, she still enjoyed road trips to see the area where she grew up, visits to her relatives around Iowa and dining out at many of the local restaurants.

Nellie will long be remembered as a special friend of many. She spent hours on the phone listening to others, making sure that they knew she cared and was praying for them. She lived out her faith daily, an example to those who came in contact with her.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, cousins, as well as many close friends.

Online condolences may be left for the funeral home at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

Special thanks to the staff at Luther Manor, Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Hermann, Pastor Merlin Schlichting, and her church family and friends and David Horstmann for the care provided.
