Rose Buhr (Wimmer)
Rose Wimmer Buhr, 85, of Dubuque passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Luther Manor. Rose formerly resided at 249 Southgate Dr. in Dubuque.
A celebration of Rose's life will be held Sunday, June 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the Dubuque Museum of Art, 701 Locust St. Family, friends, former students, and anyone whose life was touched by this amazing woman are invited to share their memories.
Rose was born on December 15, 1929 in Dubuque, the daughter of John and Ethel (Weisbenner) Wimmer. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1947 and went on to receive her BA degree in education from the University of Dubuque in 1951.
Rose was united in marriage to Harry H. Buhr on March 10, 1956 at St.John's Lutheran Church in Dubuque. In Harry she found a kind, loving and loyal helpmate who could truly be called a gentleman.
Rose was a born educator, nurturing a love of learning in the countless students she taught. Her insatiable curiosity for a variety of subjects, including world cultures, classical music, art history and literature was both contagious and inspirational. Rose considered teaching a noble profession and a calling and poured her considerable energies and intellect into communicating both the discipline and most importantly, the joy of learning.
Herself a lifelong learner, Rose earned an MA degree in elementary education from Clarke University in 1972. It was one of her proudest achievements after years of attending night classes and summer school while juggling the duties of being a mother and full time teacher.
During a career in education that spanned over 35 years, Rose taught at St. Anthony's, and St. Mary's elementary schools and also summer school at Dubuque Senior High School. Perhaps she is most beloved for the twenty years she spent as a sixth grade teacher at Bryant Elementary school. She was at Bryant when she retired from teaching in 1989.
The soundtrack of Rose's life was classical music and she took refreshment in it daily. Rose was proud of the many instruments she mastered, among them the viola, bassoon, piano and organ. In later years when mobility became limited and her world smaller, she found much pleasure in listening to selections from her favorite composers, among them Beethoven, Schumann,Chopin and Brahms. Rose and her husband Harry were enthusiastic and indefatigable world travelers, always ready for the next great adventure. Both possessed an open mind and respect for other cultures that made these excursions so enjoyable. During the 1980's they traveled to numerous countries in Europe, the Mid and Far East, China, Russia and Australia. They would return bearing books, photographs, textiles and art, eager to "unpack" the stories of their exotic experiences.
Rose is survived by her daughters, Margaret (Brian Peters)of Dubuque and Barbara of Warm Springs, VA.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Harry H. Buhr.
